About
French-Moroccan stand-up comedian and international sensation
Gad Elmaleh was born on April 19th, 1971 in Casablanca, Morocco. At 17, he left Morocco for Canada, working in Montreal for radio, television and theatres. Then, in 1992, he moved to Paris, where he was selected for the Court Florent, which he attended for 3 years.
In 1994-1995, he wrote his first one-man show called Décalages. The audience discovered the young comedian and gave him a warm reception.
He also began his career in cinema with the movie Salut Cousin, directed by Merzak Allouache, in 1995. However, it’s with his second show La vie normale, directed by Isabelle Nanty, that Gad truly found success, performing to sold-out crowds.
He then made more film appearances, and in 2000, he achieved recognition with the role of Dov in La vérité si je mens! 2, one of the biggest box-office hits in France that year.
In 2003, with support from Merzack Allouache, he adapted one of his favorite characters for the screen Chouchou, which was a hit, with over 4 million admissions.
He followed up with Olé, alongside Gérard Depardieu, played the lead rôle in Hors de prix by Pierre Salvadori alongside Audrey Tautou, and portrayed Pignon in La doublure by Francis Veber.
In 2004 and 2005, he served as Master of Ceremonies for the 29th and 30th César Awards. In 2006, Gad was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
He once again found success with the one-man show L’autre, c’est moi, which he directed himself, embarking on an international tour, performing in London, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and Montreal, making him the first French-speaking comedian to tour the United States.
In the spring of 2007, Gad completed the writing of his new show, Papa est en haut, which he tested in intimate places for a year. He then embarked on a major 60-date tour in France, followed by a seven-week run at the Olympia in front of a full house. In 2008, he also performed Papa est en haut at the Palais des Sports for seven weeks of sold-out shows.
Meanwhile, Gad wrote and directed his first film, Coco, in which he played the lead role. Coco, inspired by one of his stage characters, is a flamboyant and megalomaniac billionaire who wants to throw an extravagant bar mitzvah for his son.
In March 2009, Gad realized a dream: he went to Los Angeles to work under Steven Spielberg in Tintin, alongside Daniel Craig and Jamie Bell.
